Magnitude 7.3 Quake Jolts Vanuatu

(MENAFN) A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake rattled the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on Monday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation as residents in surrounding areas reported feeling intense shaking.

The seismic event struck at approximately 0844 GMT, with its epicenter located northeast of Luganville, the country's second most populous city, at a depth of roughly 72 miles below the surface — a level classified as intermediate by seismological standards. Earthquakes at such depths typically generate less surface destruction than shallower tremors, though their powerful magnitude can still pose significant risks to coastal and inland communities alike.

Vanuatu sits along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the most seismically active zones on the planet, making the archipelago nation no stranger to powerful geological events. The island chain regularly experiences tremors, and its population of roughly 300,000 people has long lived under the shadow of both earthquake and volcanic activity.
