Indonesia’s Mount Semeru Sends Ash, Hot Clouds Soaring
The initial eruption occurred at 5.54 am (2254 GMT Friday), with the hot clouds moving southeast toward the Besuk Kobokan river area, a news agency reported, citing an official from the Semeru Observation Post.
Ash clouds spread toward the north and northeast, creating a dense gray column that soared 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) above the volcano’s summit.
A subsequent eruption took place at 7.25 am, generating an ash plume that reached 1,500 meters above the peak. Seismic instruments detected considerable volcanic tremors during both eruptions.
Situated on the boundary between Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java province, Semeru continues to be at Level III Alert status, Indonesia’s second-highest warning tier.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation has advised locals and visitors to refrain from entering areas within 13 kilometers (8 miles) of the crater in the southeast sector, especially along the Besuk Kobokan river.
Authorities additionally cautioned against approaching riverbanks within 500 meters, highlighting the danger of lava flows and spreading hot clouds that could extend up to 17 kilometers from the summit.
