Doomsday Clock Edges Closer to Midnight
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, which oversees the symbolic clock, attributed the unprecedented shift to mounting nuclear perils, worsening planetary warming, and the explosive emergence of destabilizing emerging technologies.
Alexandra Bell, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, delivered a stark assessment: "Humanity has not made sufficient progress on the existential risks that endanger us all."
Daniel Holz, chair of the Bulletin's science and security board and a physics professor at the University of Chicago, emphasized the planet's deteriorating climate conditions. "Droughts, fires, floods and storms continue to intensify and become more erratic, and this will only get worse," Holz said.
Created following World War II in response to atomic weaponry's devastating debut, the Doomsday Clock serves as a warning mechanism designed to alert both citizens and government officials about civilization-ending dangers.
The timepiece has crept progressively nearer to its symbolic endpoint over recent years, with researchers expressing alarm that global leaders continue to sidestep critical measures needed to counteract multiplying threats to human survival.
